This is a stunning twist-extension pencil in yellow metal (probably coated brass) dating from the late 1800s - early 1900s.  This design was extremely well-developed in the USA, where their manufacturers produced the finest engineered examples which largely monopolised the market.

This pencil is in absolutely beautiful condition - bright, clean, no damage or dents and has a quality weight in the hand.  It has some handling wear / age-related wear visible under magnification, commensurate with being c. 120 years old.  It has no maker's marks or marks anywhere indicating maker or origin.  It is in a torpedo / bullet shape when retracted.

It has a beautiful engine-turned barbers' pole pattern engraved to the two sections which twist around the centre line.  When twisted to propel the lead mechanism out of the sheath and propel the lead itself, the pattern gives the most eye-catching optical effect (see video).

When extended, the pencil is a good size (10cm long) and the extended tip then controls the lead propulsion.  Both this twist mechanism and the twist extend mechanism are working perfectly and smoothly - the engineering is excellent and all the tolerances feel firm and snug.

The top of the pencil unscrews to reveal a lead storage chamber.

The pencil comes with a vintage carton of Wolff's Superior Leads, which contains several refill pieces.  The lead size is the rather rare VS size (1.5mm diameter) which was common at the time, so this carton of leads has some value too.

Cased in a small blue leather, gold tooled, silk and velvet-lined box, fully working, entire, hinges strong, interior clean and unmarked.

This is a beautiful and fully working bundle of history and it will be a delight for whoever brings it back in to work.
