Brugmansia sanguinea, is still very rare in cultivation originally from Colombia and Bolivia. Few plants evoke as much attention as this little tree or shrub, that grows to 2m - 3m in height, with huge tubular flowers that last from spring to autumn. It is a fast-growing species with fantastic display of red flowers with a greenish base between 25 to 30 cm long. The flowers of this species are very attractive to bees, butterflies and birds.

Planted in pots can reach the height of 90 cm to 1.20 meters in its first year in cultivation, being able to double in size the following year.

The seeds from these plants are slow to germinate (Germination may take up to 6 weeks) but they do have a high germination rate and grow fairly quickly.
The trick to propagation with seeds is to keep them moist and be patient.

Germination: Chill the seeds. Put them in a small jar and put it in the refrigerator for 6 weeks. This simulates cold winter weather. Once out of the fridge nick the seed. Rub each seed against an emery board type of nail file or a piece of medium grade sandpaper until it makes a mark on the seed. Soak the seeds in a cup of slightly warm water for 24 hours prior to planting. Fill pots with potting soil, simply press the pre-soaked seeds firmly against the soil, but don’t cover them. Water the pots immediately and cover them with a piece of clear plastic to keep the humidity high around the seeds. Put in a warm and sunny spot. Once germinated harden off before moving outdoors. They like partial shade.
