Artist's Biography:
Arie
Kaplun (Israeli, b. Belarus 1909-1995)
Arie Kaplun
was born in the town of Nyasvizh (Nesvizh) in Belarus, as the eldest son of a
family of eight. Kaplun's father's original surname was Cher, but he bought the
identity of another person, whose surname was Kaplun, in order to avoid being
drafted into the Russian army.
In 1926, Kaplun immigrated to the Land of Israel (then British Mandate for Palestine),
but chose to keep the surname Kaplun, and not return to the name Sher.
In Israel he lived in Afula, where he participated in Gdud HaAvoda group
(a socialist Zionist work group in Mandate Palestine established
in 1920 for the purpose of Jewish labor, settlement and defense and named
after Joseph Trumpeldor).
In the years
1928 to 1929 Kaplun studied art in Bezalel Academy of Arts and Crafts in
Jerusalem. Together with his brother and father he worked in a family
photography shop on Jaffa Street.
After finishing his art studies, he moved to the village of Motza near
Jerusalem, where he joined the "Motza group", a group of artists who
lived in the village.
In 1946 he married Sarah Nussbaum and moved to live in Tel Aviv. Later, when
Kaplun's wife died, he used to add her name, "Sara", to his signature.
Towards the end of his life he moved to Be’er Sheva to live close to his family.
His work
Kaplun
specialized in paintings in the style of pointillism, a post-impressionist
style that developed in France between 1884-1900. In this style, the painting
is built from dots and spots of different colors, which create the whole
painting as a mosaic. This type of painting is slow, calculated, and precise,
usually done in the studio after a quick sketch in nature.
Kaplun often painted the landscapes and figures of the Land of Israel. He did
this from the point of view of a person who grew up in the country and lived
its landscape, so he does not describe the country from the outside but shows
it as it is revealed to his eyes from the inside, and the viewer is left
wondering what reality in the painting is, and where does the artist's
imagination begin.
Even when Kaplun painted grotesque figures, he did so with humor, so that even
the darkest figures are surrounded by the same warm Israeli light.
For the purpose of his paintings, Kaplun used dots of color that seem almost
transparent, which merge into each other into figures and landscape lines that
are illuminated with great light.
He made the paintings using delicate strokes of a thin brush, with a lot of
patience, consistency and patience.
