Large brass 4-prong style base from the model 1872 dress helmet.  Please see images above for condition.  These came from the collection of an elderly man (now deceased) in Tucson who used to metal detect in southern Arizona back in the 1960s-1980s, and these relics were in a box marked "Fort Thomas."  Fort Thomas is located along the Gila River in southeastern Arizona and was in use from the 1870s through the 1890s.  It was located near the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation and played a major role in the Apache Wars of the late 1800s.  Nothing remains of Fort Thomas today, and a small town is now located on part of the old fort site.  Thanks for looking!  Please take a look at my other listings for more dug relics!
