WILLIAM CLEVERLY ALEXANDER (1840-1916). Famous Victorian banker & Patron of the Arts. Accomplished painter & draughtsman.
Member of the Burlington Fine Arts Club and a founding member of the National Art Collections Fund. Alexander was a major collector of James McNeill Whistler. During the 1870's Alexander commissioned Whistler to paint his three daughters. The portrait of Cicely Alexander is listed as one of Whistler's major works. Whistler also designed decorative schemes for the home of W. C. Alexander, Aubrey House in Kensington. Roger Fry described Alexander as one of the 'most important figures in the world of art' and maintained that Alexander saved England from the disgrace of leaving Whistler unrecognised.
