DESCRIPTION
The scarce two volume twelfth edition of Defoe's classic work of English literature, first published in 1719.
A very desirable illustrated edition.
Volume I illustrated with seven plates, and volume II with five plates. Collated, lacking the very scarce folding map frontispiece to volume II as usual, and lacking also one further plate.
A fictional autobiography of the title character, a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives and mutineers before being rescued. The novel was immediately well received, and is often credited as marking the beginnings of realistic fiction as a literary genre, and as a contender for the position of first English novel.
Defoe was a prolific and versatile writer, producing hundreds of works on diverse topics including politics, crime, religion, marriage and the supernatural, but is best remembered for this work.
