Neoclassical ormolu Parisian mantel clock Diana resting on a tree ca. 1820

This French neo-classical style pendulum clock depicts Diana resting by a tree stump, accompanied by her dog. The wonderful work is matt and bright gold-plated as well as burnished and finely cast. The details are very intricate and have been masterfully crafted by the chaser.

The guilloché and gilded dial with Roman numerals is located in the center, the lynette adorns the dial as a fine wreath of flowers. The Breguet hands are made of blued steel. The dial is signed Baltzar á Paris. The dial and the hands are in very good condition.

The case is rectangular and stands on four feet. These are also very charmingly decorated - as horns of plenty that end in a ram's head and a lion's head. These are entwined by another chimera: the snake bodies end in the head of a swan. In the center of the case is a large, elegant relief depicting Diana's attributes: two crossed quivers of arrows, a bow and a laurel vine. The gilding is beautifully preserved and all parts are original.

The pendulum movement has an anchor escapement, the pendulum is fitted with a thread suspension and strikes the bell every half hour. The running time is 7 days.

The movement has been oiled by the clockmaker and its function checked. It runs and strikes as it should. The case has been cleaned.

The dimensions are: height 49cm, width 34cm, depth 14cm. The weight is 8kg.

Overall, the clock is in excellent condition

Diana was the twin sister of Apollo. She is considered the virgin goddess of the hunt and the moon, but was also particularly revered by women and girls. She was regarded as a helper in childbirth, although she herself remained childless. Many temples in Rome and in all provinces were dedicated to Diana.v
