Few can lay claim to the level of undeniable influence DiMarzio had in revolutionizing the sonic landscape of guitarists. Namely, the company debuted the now-historic Super Distortion in the early 1970s, marking the world’s first replacement pickup and the first to be expressly designed for sending a tube amp into complete overdrive. DiMarzio sought to reimagine the Super Distortion’s high-octane output in a Filter’Tron-style architecture, leading the company to craft the aptly named Sper Distor’Tron. Like its fiery predecessor, the F-spaced Super Distor’Tron features ceramic magnets to elicit powerful dynamics, thundering lows, carefully scooped mids, and incisive trebles that defined the Super Distortion before it. Where guitar aficionados at Sweetwater have been most impressed is the influence of the Filter’Tron-style housing on the sonic workings of the Super Distortion, supplementing its heft and power with ’Tron-like twang and clarity that won’t get lost in high-gain performances.
Note: The Filter’Tron patented design, as well as the registered trademarks for both Gretsch and Filter’Tron, are owned by Gretsch Guitars, with which DiMarzio, Inc. is not affiliated.
