Exacta 35mm film Camera, 50mm Zeiss f/2.8 Lens, Case, Instructions - Type 1 Version 5

This is my first 35mm SLR camera. I purchased it when I was 15 years old 60 years ago. Funny that I can still remember the day I bought it from Glen at West Allis Camera (WI). This was not a "closet queen" I used it for many years until I could afford to buy a Minolta SR1s. This camera sold in 1948 for $341.00 with the coated lens which is equal to about $4350.00 in 2024 dollars. The serial number of 616399 makes it an early version 5 so I think from 1948 or 1949.

Cosmetically for a 75 year old camera it is in very nice condition with no dents of dings, just normal signs of use/age. The knife blade is broken off (used to cut a partial strip of film for processing). It was this way when I bought the camera. Film advance and counter work properly. The mirror has oxidation and possibly some surface "film" but I do not want to attempt to clean it. This makes the viewfinder image dimmer but still usable
Mechanically all shutter speeds seem quite accurate including the slow speeds. Bulb is slow to close.
The Carl Zeiss Jenna 5cm f/2.8 coated lens has no scratches or cleaning marks and the lens coatings are undamaged. There is slight internal haze. The aperture adjusts properly and focusing is smooth (distance scale is in meters.

Included is the original leather ever-ready case with neck strap which is in very nice condition. Also the original instructions which are in remarkably good condition which I somehow managed to save all these years.

Version 5
"This is the postwar version of the camera, brought back to market in 1948. The differences between it and the prewar models are fairly minor. The strap lugs are no longer of a hinged design, they are riveted into a fixed position. The slow speed dial no longer has a groove running around it, and the 1/10th speed has been replaced by 1/5. The back leather is not embossed with the Ihagee name, The tripod mount now protrudes from the bottom about .5mm instead of being flush with the leather. The mirror chamber is corrugated to minimize stray light reflections. Serial number run from 613000 to 650000."
