Description: This antique German beer stein was made by Hauber & Reuther (HR) manufacturing company in 1890s. The steins produced by HR are ones of the most collectible and desirable for the excellent quality and also rarity. The stein is made of stoneware in relief technique and hand-painted.
The decorations show people in the Tyrolean clothes resting in a tavern. A woman is playing zither - a traditional German string instrument. This is a scene from a painting of Franz Defregger (1835-1921) - a prominent and a very popular at the time German/Austrian artist who specialized in genre scenes from his native Tyrol.
Excellent quality heavy ornate pewter lid.
Marked with Hauber and Reuther HR manufacturer's mark and mold number 450.
The stein stays impressively 10.5" to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. The stein is in excellent condition with minimal age-related wear.
