Consider this very rare red box Steuben jewel-like signed Egg on a Gold Pedestal sculpture perfect for the special Spring Birthday, an important anniversary or for the collector. The egg is the symbol of life, renewal, new beginnings. This detailed hand made design by Donald Pollard resembles a Russian lacquered or Fabergé Egg. A large crystal egg shape weighing about 5lbs. is formed of the legendary optically pure glass and at it's center is a solid cast 18k gold floral arrangement, some petals brushed with white enamel. This egg is mounted on a marked 18K gold pedestal ring for a base. (approx. 2-3 ounces solid 18k gold.) Also signed Steuben in script on the bottom.
Donald Pollard was a favorite mid century designer for Steuben. He is noted for a number of major works embellished with gold and jewels. He designed the US gift of state the Great Ring of Canada as well as many iconic vases and bowls such as the Trillium and Calyx bowls, Spiral and Whirlpool Vases and mid century modern bar ware. His works are in the collections of many museums.
This vintage piece does not appear to have been displayed or out of it's red leather box, with no chips, no cracks, no scratches, no nicks or other damage. The Egg measures approx. 5" tall by 5" wide and rests on it's 18K gold base. The vintage red leather box shows wear to the leather and edges but is free of nicotine or mildew odors or stains.
Steuben was noted for their rigorous attention to detail and for the high quality of their glass. They stated in their literature that they did not market "seconds". In fact, they noted that such pieces were destroyed in house. Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903 and was located in the Fingerlakes Region of New York State. By following strict standards for design and manufacture they achieved recognition as the world's premier glassworks. Steuben Glass was frequently the gift of state by US Presidents to foreign dignitaries. Steuben, a recognized luxury brand. Because of these factors, a well maintained/handmade Steuben collectible will increase in value over time.

This is Steuben style appears in the masterworks section of the MJ Madigan reference book 2003 edition. This is a long retired mouth blown hand made in USA design.
