The basketball was inspired by the work of Cheyenne Arapaho artist Edgar Heap of Birds.

The original work, a series of paintings titled "Neufs for Hawaii" (2022), is a large-scale installation on two basketball courts in Murray Park in Long Island City, Queens, NY.

Edgar chose the color blue because it represents "an optimistic sky, or water," and also because it asserts indigenous sovereignty over what is considered public property. He is an artist, an advocate, and an educator!
