In 1979, The Eagles were in the middle of a resurgence under HOF Head Coach Dick Vermeil. Philadelphia went 11-5 that season and appeared in the postseason for the second consecutive year which hadn't been done by the club in three decades. The Eagles then hosted their first playoff game since 1960. This game was the debut of barefoot kicker Tony Franklin, a Pro Bowl selection in 1986. in 1976, he set the record for longest field goal in college football history with a kick of 65 yards. Drafted in the third round by the Eagles, he gained notoriety by kicking the fourth longest field goal (at the time) in NFL history during his rookie yr, a 59-yard cannon of a kick against Dallas on November 12, 1979.
