THE BEST OF BEARD: GREAT RECIPES FROM A GREAT COOK, by James Beard. “More than 250 tested taste treats from America’s Master Cook.” Vintage mass-market paperback book published by Warner Books. Copyright 1974. 269 pages (including a 15-page index).

This paperback book is in Good condition with a bright cover and a square, tight spine, uncreased spine. The book shows minor wear at the ends and along the edges of the spine..

The main flaw is some writing (or underlining) in blue ink on 13 of the 254 pages (or roughly 5%) of the recipe portion of the book.

Specifically, the front end-page has two small notations; two pages have minor underlining (19 and 223); three pages have an X written next to or above a recipe; and seven pages have the word “Try” written next to or above a recipe. (Examples of the writing can be found in photos 10 through 12.) If not for this writing, the condition of the book would rate as Very-Good or better.

In addition to the writing (and underlining) in the recipe portion of the book, there is underlining (along with intermittent Xs) throughout the 15-page index.

On the bright side, there are no loose, torn, creased, or missing pages, and, despite the fact that the book is almost 50 years old, the pages have very little age-related discoloration. Overall, this is a sturdy and attractive copy.
