1814 Travels To The Source Of The Missouri River And Across The American Continent To The Pacific Ocean By Lewis & Clarke. First English Edition. This book is from a local estate and was formally from the Library of Mr. Edward Everett Ayer. Mr. Ayer was an American business magnate and former California Calvary Volunteer in 1861, he was best remembered for the endowments of his substantial collections of books and original manuscripts from Native American and colonial-era history and ethnology, which were donated to the Newberry Library and Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Mr. Ayer was a charter trustee of Chicago's Newberry Library when it incorporated in 1892. In 1897 he decided to donate his personal collection of 50,000 books to the Newberry Library. Because of the enormity of the collection, it took until 1911 to catalog the entire donation. This book is from Mr. Ayer's personal library and was 1 of the 50,000 books that he donated to the library. Photo 9 shows the label applied inside of the front cover when it was cataloged into the library. the back cover has Mr. Ayer's library catalog number. This book was in possession of the Newberry Library in Chicago until some time in the 1960's when it was sold by the Newberry Library, to a private collector. The Newberry Library in Chicago which opened in 1887, is still there today and houses 1.6 million books and over 600,000 maps.  This Book is in overall good condition. There is foxing on the inside of the covers and the first few pages, beginning of book and end of book. There is 1 folded map inside. It has foxing and a small tear in the corner. The first couple of pages after the map have foxing. Other than the pages mentioned, the rest of the pages are fairly clean. There are no other illustrations in this book other than the map. The book has a musty smell, I have not tried to clean it in any way and it is in as found condition.  A One of a Kind, Book of History..... Please see all photos and email with any questions. Thanks!!!
