Robert & Courvoisier á Geneve flat elegant Directoire pocket watch with quarter repeater No. 21567, manufactured around 1800.

Very fine and rare, large, flat pocket watch with quarter repeater in 18 carat rose gold.

Making a pocket watch this flat and with a repeater was a novelty around 1800. All parts are of the highest quality, a very beautiful and elegant watch.

Case: Double-shelled, "Directoire", polished, No. 21567, concave bezel, concealed hinge. Spring-loaded glazed cuvette made of gilt metal. The back cover has small pressure marks.

Dial: White, enamel, Breguet numerals, outer minute division, very elegant blued Breguet steel hands with red gold tips. Apart from a repair to the edge at 8 o'clock, the dial and hands are in excellent condition.

Movement. 51 mm, 22 1/2''', frosted gilt, full plate, cylinder escapement, three-arm red gold balance, diamond endstone, flat balance spring, index regulator, polished steel bridge, repeater on gongs activated by pressing the pendant; polished steel repeater movement on the plate. Dial and movement signed.

The clean movement is in very good and fully functional condition.

Robert & Courvoisier

The company was founded in 1770 by J. Robert from La Chaux-de-Fonds, who entered into a partnership with his son-in-law Louis Courvoisier in 1781. The company was initially called J. Robert Son & Co, then Robert Courvoisier in 1795 and Courvoisier & Co. in 1811. Together with the Jaquet-Droz company, they were the most important manufacturers of music boxes, including complicated automatons. The company had branches in La Chaux de Fonds, Bienne, Geneva and Paris. 

The signature "Robert & Courvoisier" was only used from 1795 to 1811.
