The Pernod Ricard group was created following the merger in December 1975 of the two French companies Pernod (created in 1805 and currently headquartered in Créteil) and Ricard (created in 1932 and headquartered in Marseille), two brands aniseed aperitifs6. The group then experienced strong external growth. In 2001, Pernod Ricard acquired the wines and spirits business of the Canadian group Seagram, auctioned by Vivendi Universal following the Vivendi-Seagram merger in 2000, and separated itself from its non-alcoholic drinks, including Orangina (acquired in 1984) and Pampryl.

In 2005, then No. 3 in the world in spirits, Pernod Ricard negotiated with the company Fortune Brands the purchase of No. 2 in the world, its British competitor Allied Domecq, a conglomerate born in 1994 from several mergers, but holding strong brands such as Mumm and Perrier champagnes. -Jouët, Malibu Kahlúa liqueurs, Beefeater gin, and Ballantine's whiskey. This acquisition makes Pernod Ricard the world No. 2 in Wines and Spirits.

In Mars 2008, Pernod Ricard announced the acquisition for 5.626 billion euros of “Vin & Sprit” which owns, among other brands, Absolut Vodka7 vodka. The Pernod Ricard group competed with Fortune Brands, Bacardi and Investor for this call for tenders8.
In 2008, Pernod Ricard's turnover amounted to 6.589 billion euros, for a net profit of 840 million euros. It employs more than 17,000 people. The group is then number one in the spirits sector in Europe, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, China and Russia9.

Since the global economic crisis of 2008 and following years, Pernod Ricard has made the premiumization of its brands one of the priority axes of its strategy, seeking to rely on the potential of the BRICS10.

In April 2014, Pernod Ricard acquired the American wine company Kenwood Vineyards (en)11. In August 2014, Pernod Ricard shed 900 positions in a restructuring linked to declining results. During this restructuring, activities located in Créteil were transferred to Marseille12.

In Mars 2016, Pernod Ricard took a majority stake in Monkey 4713, the German gin manufacturer. In December, the company announced the sale of Domecq brandies and wines, the Mexican brandy brands Don Pedro, Presidente and Azteca de Oro, the Mexican wine production unit in Ensenada, to Bodega Las Copas, a company owned by Grupo Emperador Spain (en) and Gonzalez Byass (es)14.

The same year, the company acquired a Mirakl15 market place.

In December 2018, the American activist fund Elliott announced that it had acquired 2.5% of the capital of Pernod Ricard. Successful acquisitions on the stock market for a price exceeding a billion dollars. This position in the group requires Pernod Ricard to exercise caution. Elliott is pushing hard to attract certain shareholders and reach the threshold of 5% stake in the Frenchman's capital. By delivering a harsh analysis of the company's management, Elliott seeks to divide internally in order to invest massively in the capital of Pernod Ricard. Diageo and LVMH would be interested in investing in the capital of the French company whose family still has 15% of the group's shares16.

In April 2019, Pernod Ricard announced the acquisition of the super premium Italian gin brand Malfy, previously owned by Biggar & Leith17.

At the beginning of August 2019, Pernod-Ricard acquired Firestone & Robertson Distilling, an American company that owns the TX whiskey brand, a high-end Texan whiskey, and a distillery located near Fort Worth18,19.
At the end of August 2019, Pernod Ricard bought the American Castle Brands (en), owner of Jefferson's bourbon (en)20,21, for $223 million (around 201 million euros).
