New Yorker Magazine  April. 20, 1998  IRS Parody Cover

Istvan Banyai adds his sardonic note to the New Yorkers long tradition of taking the mickey out of the IRS on Tax Day.

This is one is a taxpayer stabbed in the hand by a pencil.

It belongs framed on the wall of some tax attorney’s office – or waiting room!

I have only one copy of this magazine  [But I have Others on the Tax Day theme!]  (See a separate eBay listings).

Further Comment by me:

This is Harald Leuba (again) acting as guest editor, with her permission, for my wife of 58 years, Nancy Kingsbury (aka ShowJudge).

Forgive me if I find some amusement (and some pain) in the Tax Laws.

My father was a CPA.

When I was 10 to 18, he taught accounting and tax law in the living room of our home.  He was GOOD at teaching: 67 of his students passed the Arizona CPA exam – many on their first try!

[At that time, the University of Arizona had NO students who had passed the CPA test.]

My father was also an avid reader and collector of the New Yorker Magazine!

He kept every issue they published; the first one I have is from before I was born!

In 2002 his THIRD wife asked him to “clean the garage” and de-accession these old magazines.

I rescued what I could, with particular emphasis on (1) Charles Addams and (2) the IRS covers.

I scoured eBay and the internet to fill in/add to my hoarde!

I love Charles Addams and I am bemused by the New Yorker’s visual take on “Tax Day”.  I can both imagine and support a CPA who decorated an office wall with New Yorker “Tax Day” covers!

Why are we selling this?

First:

I am now 88 years old and we realize that we have collected a lot of STUFF in this house which has both sentimental and fiscal value and we want to find homes for things that might “fall through the cracks” if an estate administrator or house cleaning crew tried to be helpful to Nancy if I died before her.

Second:

We are NOT selling to add $$$ to our retirement.

Nancy has an excellent pension after more than 50 years of Federal Civil Service: the “hi-3” at an executive grade!

And I retired from the Smithsonian Institution, as a VP of the Science Information Exchange, with my own small pension.

We are comfortable and can help others.

ALL of the proceeds of our eBay sales are earmarked for mortgage support for four breadwinners who used to work for us, but who lost income (a) when we retired and then (b) couldn’t get it back when covid happened!

So, please consider this listing and add something to make your home (or office) brighter while helping BD, BR, GD & LT keep their homes!

Thank you for reading this,

ShowJudge
