I obtained this amazing piece from the widow of a local surgeon.  She said it had been a gift from another local Doctor, of Indian heritage, and he told her this piece was used to hold snakes in India.  I cannot find any information from my research that this is legitimate report or any example of such items being used or labeled as "Snake pots"
