DETAILS:

Case:            ‘American Girl’ model. Delightful and highly noticeable with an eye-catching oval shaped case with decorative engraving the edge of the crystal. Original & signed ‘Bulova’. The 10kt gold-plated bezel and case back have been cleaned & repolished and fitted with a new acrylic crystal. There is wear to the high points around the crystal and to the case back. Please be sure you are happy with this. In general, the case looks great with wear/scratches present commensurate with the age of the watch.

 

Crown:         Showing some wear.

 

Dial:             The pearl tone dial is in its original condition complementing and accentuating the lustre of the 10kt gold-plated case. The dial is showing age related wear and patina. The even number hour positions are marked with numerals whilst the odd hour positions are elongated ticks. These along with the Bulova name are gilt. The minute chapter is in black.

 

Hands:         Hour and minute hands, are original, blue/black steel, ‘Index’ style, looking great.

 

Movement:  BULOVA high quality Swiss manual wind movement. This is a fine classic 5AB calibre with 17 jewels marked with a crescent symbol for 1938. The movement has been cleaned, oiled & adjusted, and at the time of listing is running well keeping good time ready to wear. As with all vintage watches regular servicing is recommended.

 

Size:            Oval shaped measures approx. 24.04mm lug to lug X 14.28mm wide (excluding the crown).

 

Band:           A new ‘Finesse’ black cord band with 12kt gold plated clasps has been fitted complementing the watch perfectly. The length is approx. 152mm including the watch.

 

Box:             This watch comes with its original Bulova presentation box which is in great condition for its years. The top is covered with the Bulova signature luxuriously sumptuous green velvet with two decorative gilt bands to either side. The base is covered in the same coloured velvet with four ball feet to the underside.

                    The sprung hinged lid opens as it should and lifts to reveal a deep cream silk lining. In the center there is the watch model name ‘American Girl’, ‘Bulova’ in elongated text and ‘Fifth Avenue’, New York’ beneath. The watch is mounted on a removable black velvet pad which nestles in a shallow recess with cream coloured velvet sides and silk border. Interestingly there are still the original foil Bulova and price tags present.

In general the presentation box is in remarkably good condition and has obviously been well cared for.

This is a delightful example of a lady’s Bulova ‘American Girl’ cocktail watch with original presentation box from 1938 which has been restored to appeal once again – and I am sure you will agree, it certainly does. The 10kt gold-plated case and original pearl tone dial make the watch highly desirable and unmistakable.

• This is a vintage manual wind watch with a movement from 1938 and as such it will not have the accuracy of a contemporary quartz movement therefore perfect time accuracy cannot be expected. If you want a watch to simply put on and go – then perhaps this is not the best choice you could make – however, if you want a period timepiece that you can admire and enjoy on each occasion you wear it, then this is a great item.

• Colours may appear somewhat different when viewed in person depending upon the light source. In this case photos were taken using a combination of natural and fluorescent light.
