IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Kurt Klauss Calendar Chronograph with
Moonphase in 18kt Rose Gold with a Two-Tiered Silver Guilloche Signed
Dial, This watch has four chronograph sub-dials at 3 ,6, 9 and 12
o'clock. The month window is located between the 7 and 8 o'clock
positions. The watch performs the following functions: perpetual
calendar, date, year indicator, weekday indicator, month indicator, moon
phase indicator, chronograph, hours, minutes, and small seconds.
Significantly, the year is displayed in all four digits (extremely rare)
just beneath the 7 o’clock hour marker. Powered by an automatic
self-winding IWC caliber 79261 movement. Fitted on a brown alligator
leather strap with an 18kt Rose Gold foldover deployant buckle.
The
43mm solid 18kt Rose Gold three-body case, rounded tonneau-shaped
bezel, and lapidated lugs are polished/brushed. The two-tiered silver
Guilloche dial has applied luminous pink gold shaped hour marker
indexes, luminous rose gold alpha hands, a gold center chronograph hand,
and an outer 1/5th seconds track with Arabic numerals every 5-minutes.
There is a subsidiary dial for the small seconds at the 9 o'clock
position, inset into the day indicator. The Chronograph/Stopwatch
function includes a minute counter that's combined with the moon phase
sub-dial at 12 o'clock, and the hour counter is combined with the month
sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position. The perpetual calendar feature
includes a 4-digit rectangular year display at 8 o'clock, and to the
left of the month indicator is the signature of Kurt Klaus. There are
inset-shaped rectangular chronograph pushers and a screwed-down winding
crown. The solid case back is secured with 8 screws, and it's engraved
with a relief of Kurt Klaus, the master watchmaker who worked for IWC
for over 50 years. It's water resistant to 30 meters/99 feet, and it has
a power reserve of 44-hours at full wind. The 15mm thick case, dial,
and movement are all signed.
This IWC Da Vinci Kurt Klaus
Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Moonphase IW376203 has a mechanical
automatic self-winding IWC caliber 79261 movement that's rhodium plated
with cotes de Geneve embellishment. It's constructed with 39 jewels, and
a shock absorber mechanism. It includes a straight-line lever
escapement, a monometallic balance that's adjusted for temperature and 5
positions, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and a hacking
seconds mechanism. The rotor oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4
Hz). The IWC Da Vinci Kurt Klaus Perpetual Calendar IW376203 is limited
and numbered in an edition of only 500 examples worldwide.
The Da
Vinci was born from the fertile mind of IWC’s Kurt Klaus, who had
joined IWC in 1957 and trained under its legendary technical director
Albert Pellaton, who devised the elegantly simple and beautiful
automatic winding system that still bears his name. The development
process of the perpetual calendar mechanism was a historic one for IWC
for several reasons. First, the resulting watch would be the most
complicated wristwatch that IWC had ever made. Secondly, it would be
the first perpetual calendar in which all indications would be
coordinated internally (including the phase of the moon) and which could
dispense with the complex pusher adjustment system that had until then
characterized all perpetual calendars. And finally, it would be the
first perpetual calendar wristwatch to show the full four-digit year.
Finally, the entire mechanism was designed and laid out by Kurt Klaus
using a slide rule, pencil and paper, and paper models of the movement
–it would be the last movement designed “by hand” at IWC.
Crafted
with the finest materials and attention to detail reflective of IWC's
standards, the IW376203 is not just a timekeeping instrument but also a
piece of art. It is a fitting tribute to Kurt Klaus, whose contributions
to the field of watchmaking are legendary, encapsulating his philosophy
of creating complex yet easily manageable mechanical watches. This
model is highly sought after by collectors due to its combination of
technical prowess, historical significance, and aesthetic appeal.
Creating
a watch like the IWC Da Vinci Kurt Klaus Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
Moonphase, which houses an array of complex features such as a
perpetual calendar, full date and year display, weekday and month
indicators, moon phase, chronograph, and basic time-telling functions,
is an endeavor that demands not only exceptional technical skill but
also a profound artistic vision. It is the work of a master watchmaker
like Kurt Klaus, whose genius lies in the ability to harmonize such
complexity within the finite space of a watch case.
The design
and implementation of a perpetual calendar alone are monumental tasks.
This complication must accurately account for the irregularities in the
Gregorian calendar, adjusting for months of varying lengths and leap
years without manual correction until the year 2100. Integrating a
four-digit year display, especially one positioned subtly beneath the 7
o'clock hour marker, adds another layer of sophistication. This feature
is extremely rare and showcases Klaus’s dedication to creating not just a
functional timepiece but also a repository of time itself, capturing
centuries of calendar calculations in a mechanical format.
Moreover,
adding a chronograph to this mix introduces the challenge of mechanical
timing, requiring precise control over the start, stop, and reset
functions that measure elapsed time. The moon phase indicator further
enriches the dial, requiring meticulous calculation to accurately depict
the lunar cycle.
Kurt Klaus’s approach to integrating these
complications involves an intricate symphony of gears, springs, and
levers, all working in unison. The watch’s movement must be engineered
to not only perform these functions but do so in a way that maintains
the integrity and accuracy of the watch over long periods. This requires
a deep understanding of mechanical engineering as well as a creative
approach to problem-solving, ensuring that each complication can be
adjusted and aligned without interfering with others.
The
elegance with which these features are displayed on the dial also speaks
to Klaus's design philosophy. Despite the complexity, the dial must
remain legible and aesthetically pleasing, balancing technical
functionality with artistic elegance. The layout is carefully planned to
ensure that each indicator is easily readable at a glance, which is a
testament to Klaus’s meticulous attention to detail and his
understanding of the wearer's experience.
It takes a master
watchmaker like Kurt Klaus to envision and realize a watch that not only
performs a multitude of sophisticated functions but also does so with a
grace that conceals the intricate mechanics beneath a beautifully
crafted exterior. This blend of functionality, innovation, and design is
what makes the IWC Da Vinci Kurt Klaus Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
Moonphase IW376203 a masterpiece of horological art.
