Photographer and director of Le Pont gallery in Aleppo, Syria, Issa Touma believes that art is essential for surviving the horrors of war and preserving the principles of an inclusive society that are threatened by political and religious fanaticism. On April 26, 2015, when radical Islamist opposition forces announced the “Great Attack” on the city, young women of various ethnicities and religious backgrounds found shelter in Le Pont, afraid to lose either their life or lifestyle. In the ensuing week, Touma held photo sessions in the gallery to tell their stories. Fifteen women are portrayed in their customary dress, each briefly stating her fears and thoughts about the crisis and ongoing war.
