Large English Calvert Pattern Antique Chess Set
Strong box with red baize

King height 101mm

Circa 1870.. could be earlier.

Finely turned concentric decorated bodies with a delightful variation between pieces.. a sign of the turners hand.

Patination is lovely and is consistent throughout the set.

Condition:
Many pieces have chips or dinks with damage particularly to the crenelations of the rooks and a collar to the black king... I have shown this in the last photo above.

I would describe this set as a players set that shows it's battle scars with pride, if this is your thing then great.. if not then you might wish to move on and as you do I wish you well.

Quick recap:
A finely turned early desirable large English chess set that has seen better days, but in it's own way projects a character rarely seen... perhaps there's someone that can give it the home it deserves.

Perhaps someone might restore it.
Now wouldn't that be something.

That's it.. enough said.

Many thanks for looking
Good Luck
