A bit of history.  A parade for former Civil War General and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant was held in Philadelphia on December 16, 1879. To commemorate the event, the U.S. Mint struck brass medals and distributed them to the public. Also some white metal examples were struck, and one example was made in silver, unaccounted for today. Just two are known in gold alloy.
