FINE ANTIQUE CHINESE  CAST & HAND ENGRAVED BRASS TEA CADDY
BODY PANELS SENSITIVELY DECORATED WITH SEASONAL FOLIAGE & POEMS

Brass wares produced in large quantities for western export at the close of the Qing Dynasty through the Republic of China era typically exhibit indifferent workmanship and finishing.  This handsome example from my personal collection of Asian boxes is distinctly different - displaying remarkable complexity, detail and quality.

The cover with overhanging incised rim has a high relief cast florette medallion.  An applied band of precious objects decorates the tall neck.  Body panels incorporate rows of inscribed calligraphy flanking sprays of flowers and sparse shrubs - doubtless representing the seasons.  A second band of relief cast precious objects, brocade and fish is applied to the lower wall.  The caddy is raised on domical copper feet.
