Offered here is a vintage South Pacific US Navy chart from the end of WWII.  The chart centers on Port Moresby on the Papua New Guinea south coast.  Chart No. 2948. The chart was created by the US Navy based on surveys performed by the Australian Government in 1939 & 1940.  This chart was printed in Feb 1945, 8 months before the Japanese surrendered.

Port Moresby was a long fought after location from the very early in the war, beginning less than six weeks after Pearl Harbor. It was also the location of some of the wars most bitter fighting, by Australians, Japanese, New Zealanders and native Papuans on the ground, in the air, and at sea. It is estimated more than 220,000 Japanese lost their lives in the Papua and New Guinea campaign alone.
