Pictured is a quite novel & unusual blue & white spongeware lid or cover offered for sale.  The large sponged cover fits upon a two-piece spongeware cuspidor or spitoon.  Most large stoneware cuspidors are designed in one piece with a cut-out on their side for emptying.  This cuspidor lid has a concave shape & form and would overlap a cuspidor's side walls.  It measures 11 7/8" in diameter & would rest upon a cuspidor with a maximum outside diameter of 10 5/8".  It dates from 1895 - 1920 & is in excellent condition with no nicks, damage or repairs.  The lid was salvaged from an early country hardware store in the Midwest.
