Absolutely wonderful little camera! As a lifelong Fuji fan I was absolutely shocked at how stunningly gorgeous and functional the X-S20 is.
To start my review, I’d like to list my complaints/downsides to this camera:
1. How fast it overheats. which is understandable due to the size of the camera and the absolute insane resolution this little guy can shoot in. The cooling fan also helps to mitigate this.
2. Lack of more customizable presets. Having only 4 presets really limits the potential I want to push this thing to.
An absolute perfect transition from an almost entirely still photographer (X-Pro-3, in addition to my many analog cameras (35mm, medium format, Super 8).
With the addition of Fuji’s cooling fan accessory, this little “vlogging” camera turns into a pocket/travel sized cinematic powerhouse.
The OLED viewfinder is a gorgeous addition (I just recently purchased my first device with an OLED screen, and it truly does live up to its hype).
What was most surprising to me was the absolute INCREDIBLE sound quality of the built-in microphone. I recently used it with a gimbal to shoot a music event, and I was blown away at how good it sounded. It sounded just as good as my other video rig using an external Audio Technica XLR shotgun mic (as far as actual sound quality goes from a digital benchmarking point of view, a decent external microphone will absolutely give better results, but with the X-S20 in a concert setting I saw no need).
Now if you’re going for a documentary style video you’re going to want some external recording hardware, be it a shotgun or wireless mics for the type of directional audio needed for that context.
I think what elevates Fuji’s systems to my personal favorite is their film simulation feature they offer. From all of Kodak’s beautiful films line Portra 400 to Cinestill, Ilford, and pretty much any and every analog film you are fond of (I’ve been able to find “recipes” for all my favorites, plus discover so many more recipes that aren’t only recreations of existing film but some incredibly gorgeous ones the wonderful Fuji community has created— I will share my absolute favorite at the end of this review).
Now I’m entirely used to and ONLY have experience using these film simulation recipes with still photographs. I wasn’t sure if these recipes would work well (look good, not be limited to a lower resolution or FOS— some sort of video limitaton qeven possible to use them with video, and there wasn’t too much info online on whether it was even possible from a software point of view
