Mercury is historically the first type of sphygmomanometer, giving the most accurate readings due to its simplicity: pressure is measured by a column of mercury moving in a vertically arranged glass tube. That is why, according to tradition, blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, as it was originally, and not in modern pressure units of kilopascals (kPa). Currently, mercury blood pressure monitors are practically not used.
