Very rare! This is one of the most sought after German bayonets of the ERSATZ (Emergency) series released during The Great War. This is an all steel Ersatz version of the M-98/05 Butcher Saw Back Bayonet. This example is found on pages 104-109 of J.Anthony Carter’s classic work “GERMAN BAYONETS” Volume 3 published in 1992. The ricasso bears an inspection stamp (Fractur). There is no maker’s mark or name. Ersatz bayonets were not identified with a particular maker, the exception being EB1, the famous DEMAG crank handle bayonet.

The cast steel hilt is in very good condition, the steel having a pleasant grey patina. It has good traces of its original field grey green paintwork evident. The press-stud locking mechanism is in good working order. The blade is firm in the hilt. The bayonet is complete with its original (and rare) ersatz scabbard. The scabbard is a steel copy of the first pattern steel mounted leather S98/05 scabbard. Has the leather frog as well. Plenty of wear to this bayonet it was purchased from a local WWI vet estate here in New Orleans. That’s all the history I have on it. The blade has some ugly pitting but a very rare bayonet anyway.
