This coin celebrates the Ukrainian language. Language is not only a communications means, but also a carrier of a rich cultural heritage, and is part of our culture’s genetic code. It was language that at the most difficult moment in Ukraine’s history became the foundation of our unity, and our weapon. Today, the spirit of freedom, which is impressing the whole world, is associated with the Ukrainian language.
Obverse: there are the stylized Ukrainian letter Ї and a nightingale that stands for the melodiousness and mellifluousness of the Ukrainian language; in the center of the letter is Ukraine’s small coat of arms; against a smooth background are the outlines of the letters from the Ukrainian alphabet; the outlines associatively resemble a nest, which is a symbol of home and a family’s protective amulet; beneath are the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the coin’s face value – 5, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia, the coin’s issue year – 2023, and the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: there is a stylized composition that consists of the letters from the Ukrainian alphabet; the composition highlights the Ukrainian letters Ґ, Ї, Є, І, which distinguish the Ukrainian language phonetically and graphically from other cultures that use the Cyrillic alphabet. The Ukrainian letters У, К, Р, А, Ї, Н, И are also highlighted. Combined with the words НАША МОВА (our language), these letters make up the expression наша мова України (our Ukrainian language). The elements of the reverse composition emphasize the integration of the language into modern gadgets, digital devices, and information networks.
