This is an antique Yoruba statue recently purchased from a private collection.  It is hand carved of wood and features a depiction of a Muslim hunter.  He has Fez type hat with a carved tassel and holds a long rifle type gun in one hand and a machete in the other. He has a strand of multi-colored beads wrapped around his neck and has a carved ammo belt wrapped around his waist and back.  The base is incorporated into the carving.

It measures 15" tall.

Condition: The finish is very rough on this piece. There are a lot of hairline cracks and wear on this piece, especially on his head and body. There are piece missing from the ammo belt and a lot of inactive insect damage.  See close up photos.

We purchased the collection of late 19th and early 20th century Nigerian artifacts collected between approx. 1950-70. There are over 50 pieces with a focus on ceremonial, ritual and spiritual tools and also a collection of West African currency manilla bracelets. Many are rare museum quality pieces including Ifa Divination tools, cowrie shrines and Santeria fetishes and Eshu figures.

Be sure to check my listings for the other pieces from the same collection. All the pieces have been privately held for the last 60+ years by the original collectors and are offered here for sale for the first time.

Provenance will be provided to the winning buyer if requested.
