Primitive Antique Hand Woven Oak Splint Basket With Bentwood Handle

Handmade splint oak basket in oval or egg form is woven with wood strips and supported with a bentwood, stationary handle which wraps around the bottom.

Uncertain age, likely Early 20th Century. Probably from New England.

This basket was probably used for light gathering tasks like collecting eggs. Baskets like this one are frequently called "melon" or "gizzard" baskets, terms that refer to their particular rounded shape. Most are constructed in a wickerwork rib-style, meaning that fine splints (thin, flexible wood strips) are woven in and out over sturdy ribs, which establish the basic shape.
