LIFE AND DEATH OF JOHN OF BARNEVELD BY JOHN LOTHROP MOTLEY 1874 2 VOLS.  Here, just to the north of the Mohawk Valley in Upstate New York, is the town of Barneveld, one of the major towns of the once Holland Land Company held “Holland Patent.”  So I was not too surprised to find this rather obscure Dutch history book at a local sale.  For your consideration I am pleased to offer the two-volume set of: “The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, Advocate of Holland,” and as the subtitle goes on to say: “with a View of the Primary Causes and Movements of the Thirty Years War,” by John Lothrop Motley.  This medium-sized two volume hard cover set (6 x 9 inches, with 389 in Volume I and 475 pages in Volume II) was published by Harper & Brothers of New York, dated 1874 and probably a First Edition.  These books are bound in brown cloth with paste-down paper title panels on the spines.  The top edge of the pages is gilt.  There are a few illustrations in each volume.

Condition:  This two-volume set is in very good condition. The hard covers are dust-dulled and show some rubbing to their finish; the spines and their labels are darkened but still legible.  There is some bumping to the corners of both volumes and to the spine tips, along with some minor holes in the gutters, one each on the top side of each book (please see the photos).  Inside on the first blank page of Volume I, there is a penciled Christmas presentation note, and in both books what looks to be the remains of an erased bookseller’s price.  Otherwise, the interior pages, you will be astonished as I was, are very clean and bright with just the slightest sign of age-toning.  The front hinge of Volume I is starting but the others are intact, and the binding feels tight and sound in both cases.  These books are not ex-library or are they remainders.

Shipping:  These two books will be very carefully packed, with bubble wrap and solid cardboard protection and promptly mailed upon payment.  Please note that I do not charge for packing and handling; all you pay is the postage.  Media mail postage for these two medium-sized hard cover books will be only $6.00.  International and Canadian buyers should be aware that these two books will easily exceed the four-pound weight limit for International First Class Mail and will therefore require a US Postal Service Priority International Medium Flat Rate box for shipment.  Within the US for domestic mailings, combined shipping for multiple purchases is gladly offered.  You will pay full price for the shipping of the first book and half price for any others purchased that same week.  For example, two books with shipping at $4 each will ship for $6 combined.

Please see my many other vintage and collectible books on offer, quite a mixed bag but hopefully appealing to some of you.

Please don’t hesitate to send in any questions; I will monitor closely and respond promptly.  Thanks, and enjoy.
