This amazing find is an original vintage 1964 Cole of California "Outrageous" swimsuit designed by theatrical designer Margit Fellegi when she was head designer at Cole. It was part of Fellegi's famous "Scandal" series of suits. The "Outrageous" is particularly special because it is in the Met Costume Institute's permanent collection (see link) and was worn by a Bond girl in the film Thunderball. What makes this particular suit even more special is that it is in leopard print, which Cole first adopted for its The Female Animal Collection in the 1950s. Most of the existing "Outrageous" suits are in black, making this suit quite unique. This same print was used on another swimsuit from the series, worn by Tina Louise on Gilligan's Island. It is an extremely rare find. Though designed as a swimsuit, it would make a fantastic bodysuit, romper, or burlesque piece. Imagine it with tall black boots! You. Will. LOVE. It!

From the Met's website: "In 1964, Cole of California introduced the “Scandal” bathing suit line, named for its provocative exposure of the body through panels of nylon mesh. Margit Fellegi designed the suits using a process she developed for shirring cotton on elastic thread. According to Fellegi, the innovative fabric provided the figure control and fit of a girdle. This suit from the “Scandal” collection, named the “Outrageous,” features a bra top and hipster brief joined by a black mesh insert at the midriff. The style allowed the wearer to experiment with less coverage without sacrificing support."

The chest has pretty cup inserts to help shape your figure. The shoulder straps are adjustable with two buttons. The leopard print fabric is nylon. The fishnet is a cotton / nylon blend. It doesn't feel like there is elastic in the leg openings, but if there ever was, it no longer has stretch.
