NOTE ON
CONDITION eBay bidders who are interested
in this A. W. FABER CASTELL Engineers Log
Log Closed Frame Beech Laminate Slide Rule No. should be aware that the slide
rule as examined, has been carefully used by its previous owner(s). There are
no obtrusive or detractive contact marks, ink/pencil marks, scrapes, or dings
on the rule and reversible slide. Also, there are no past ownership marks of
any kind. The mentioned cosmetics flaw would

this shortcoming is recognizable and expected to be viewed by some to be a
slight negative aspect to the overall package value of this 1953 vintage slide
rule. Please note that the overall
existing fine state, and operable condition were considered in making
appropriate value adjustments in setting the minimum bid amount for this
auction. eBay bidders are encouraged to
fully examine all pictures and review this input before making any decision
to participate in this auction. |
In absolute great

mentioned in the table are: Scale, LL2,
A, {B, CI C}, D, LL3 The K scale is on the front bottom side. The
back of the slide provides the SIN/COS,
Log, and TANGENT/COTANGENT scales.
The scales are labeled on this slide rule, they are the following using the
location abbreviations (Body/Slide) (Front/Back) Bottom Side in the table

Scale
Of Sines And Cosines Used to determine sines or
cosines of angles, typically within range of 5.7 and 90 degrees (although
there is some variation in lower limit). Presented with increasing numbers
for Sines and decreasing numbers for Cosines on the same scale. For example,
to find the SINE of 32 degrees, set the degree number (eg. 32°) on the SIN/COS Scale using the index line on
the back indent side of the slide, then read the result on the B Scale under the A1 on the A Scale. (eg. Sin 32° = .53). |

Mantissa
Scale. Logarithms to base 10. This slide rule uses the D
Scale in conjunction with the C
Scale Used To Determine The Log Values (Mantissa Only) Found On The LG Scale. For example, the log of
1.35 would be found by placing the C
Scale (Index) over the number 1.35 on the D Scale, the log number of 0.1303 would be found under index line
on the LG Scale. (eg. Lg 1.35 = 0.1303).

example to find the TANGENT of 7 degrees 40 minutes, set the degree number
(eg. 7° 40’) on the TG/CTG Scale
using the index line on the back indent side of the slide, then read the
result on the D Scale under the A1
on the A Scale. (eg. Tangent 7°40’ = .0.1346). |
Background. FABER-CASTELL slide rules were made primarily in Germany (plus Switzerland and Austria) starting in 1882, and are known for their design and elegance, and clearly was one of the prominent European slide rule makers. Faber-Castell sold a wide range of models, with many of their early offerings made of Swiss pearwood or boxwood with celluloid facings. Later in 1952, rules were made out of Geroplast and featured some of the most useful and advanced features ever seen on slide rules. Always the innovator, Faber was often copied but rarely duplicated by other manufacturers and remain among the most sought after by collectors. Additional information about A.W. Faber-Castell slide rules can be reviewed at different Internet web sites including: https://www.sphere.bc.ca, http://tinas-sliderules.me.uk/Slide%20Rules/Faber.html, and https://sliderulemuseum.com
Using the valuation and information guides* similar to the grading of fine tools, this 1953 vintage A. W. FABER CASTELL Engineers Log Log Closed Frame Beech Laminate Slide Rule No. 1/92 might be graded in a FINE+ rating in accordance with the criteria:
FINE: Slide Rule is completely useable; wood/plastic/metal is 90-100% and
may have signs of slight wear and contact marks; material of parts 80% original or old finish, smooth surface
and edges slightly rounded; no breakage or repair; reveal; maker’s marks and
model number which are clear and easily legible. NOTE: Grading is an art and not an exact science thereby creating
the need for sound judgment. To address the wide scope of possibility, most
grading guides are purposely vague and somewhat subjective in nature. Grading combines personal opinion, subject
matter research, past experience, and knowledge to allow each individual a
distinct perspective in assessing reasonable or acceptable condition. Value
determination comes with the rarity, customization, existing item condition
as derived from review of available pictures, questions to the seller, and
study of pertinent reference materials. Multiple pictures taken at different
angles and available lighting may offer the only possible visual overview of
specific features along with the revelation of both the highlights and
failings to support a sound decision whether to participate in this online
auction. |
