Aeolian-Skinner Remembered: A History in Letters

by Charles Callahan

Published by Randall M. Egan, 1996. First Edition. Very good hardcover, no dustjacket. Tight binding, solid spine, clean unmarked text. Illustrated, 8vo, 538 pages. A must for every pipe organ lover. A well-crafted collection of letters, memos, etc. that tell the "Aeolian-Skinner story", from the company's highest highs to its lowest lows. Organs, makers, history, correspondence, Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company.

Similar in concept to his previous work "The American Classic Organ" Charles Callahan provides a compendium of the AEolian-Skinner Organ Company's (of Boston and Randolph. MA) letters, files and memos detailing the planning and back room dealing for many notable AEolian-Skinner instruments. Copies of shop notes detailing the tonal plan for several important instruments are also provided. Not every organ AE-S ever built is detailed in this book, but the more notable ones are. An amazing chronological compendium of letters, notes and files. Almost like reading AEolian-Skinner's private mail, it reads like a diary rather than a biography. This book provides interesting reading for those knowledgable about famous AEolian-Skinner organs.
