DETAILS:

Case:            ‘Royal Clipper’ model. Highly sophisticated and noticeably different, with elongated sweeping lugs mounting the band. Original and signed BULOVA on the back. The 10kt gold plated bezel and stainless steel case back have been cleaned & repolished and fitted with a new acrylic crystal. In general the case looks great with only modest wear/scratches commensurate with the age of the watch.

Crown:         New, newly acquired ‘Bulova’ stock, signed. Excellent.

Dial:             Immaculate, complementing the distinctiveness of the case. The dial has been professionally refinished in a two-tone silver quad ‘bow tie’ design. The even number hour positions are marked with gold tone numerals whilst the odd hour positions are arrow shaped gilt markers which are slightly raised on the dial to great effect. The ‘Bulova’ name, ‘selfwinding’ and minute chapter are in black. The hour positions along with the hour and minute hands have been relumed and now glow well in the dark.

Hands:         Hour, minute and sweep second hand are all original, gilt.

Movement:  BULOVA Swiss automatic movement. This is a fine classic 11ACAC calibre with 17 jewels marked ‘L6’ for 1956. The movement allows for both manual and selfwinding. It is designed to prevent over-winding. The movement has been cleaned, oiled & adjusted, and is running well keeping good time ready to wear. As with all vintage watches regular servicing is recommended

Size:            Round, measures approx. 30.93mm in diameter excluding the lugs and crown. Approx. 37.62mm lug to lug.

Band:           A new 16mm black leather band with gold tone buckle has been fitted complementing the timepiece perfectly.

Box:             This watch comes with its original hard case presentation box, cardboard outer and papers.

The outer cardboard box lid is dark blue and gently embossed to give a linen textured effect. In a stylised font is ‘Bulova’ taking center stage, with ‘Fifth Avenue’ beneath. Interestingly the original foil venders tag of Springfields Jewelers from Portland, Maine is present on the side of the box. The base is in cream colour with the ‘Bulova’ name in a diagonal motif. The outer is showing age related wear, including scuffs, scrapes, stains and wear having performed its task of protecting the contents admirably.

The hard case presentation box is in remarkable condition having been protected by the cardboard outer. The box is a highly polished dark blue celluloid embellished with bold ridges to the top which extend onto the front giving rise to an almost theatrical appearance. The Bulova name is given pride of place on the front with the Goddess of Time logo in gold tone above.

The sprung lid opens as it should to reveal the sumptuous interior lined with plush cream coloured silk. The decoration to the underside has ‘Bulova’ and ‘Clipper’ in bold stylised text with ‘self-winding’, ‘shock resistant’, ‘anti-magnetic’ and ‘waterproof’ below on a dark blue background. The Clipper logo takes pride of place at the top.

The watch is presented on a removable mount which is covered in the sumptuous signature dark blue velvet.

Interestingly the original Bulova guarantee bonds are present which gives interesting background information about the watch and its attributes, along with the original price and information tags being so wonderful to have survived the years together with the watch. This is certainly a watch for the collector.

General comments:

This is a truly exceptional example of a Bulova ‘Royal Clipper’ automatic watch with original presentation box, outer, paperwork and tags from 1956 which has been restored to appeal once again. The repolished case, with eye-catching refinished two-tone silver quad bow-tie design dial make the watch highly attractive and very noticeable indeed. The watch has a pleasing classic look and feel that simply cannot be found in newer watches.

If you want a watch to simply put on and go – then perhaps this is not the best choice you could make – however, if you want a period timepiece that you can admire and enjoy on each occasion you wear it, then this is a great item.
