Large comprehensive historical book on Japanese sumi ink calligraphy.  Total number of pages is 340.  This hardcover book with original dust jacket was published on the occasion of an exhibition of Japanese calligraphy organized jointly by Japan House Gallery and The Asia Society Galleries and shown simultaneously at both New York institutions from October 4, 1984 through January 6, 1985.  This book is the first comprehensive study in English devoted to the history of Japanese calligraphy, a major art form.  The book discusses the development of basic modes of writing and innovative writing styles in Japan with calligraphies from eight distinct traditions:  Buddhist texts, aristocratic scripts, the Shoren-in tradition, Immortal Poets, Zen Buddhist masters, masters of the tea ceremony, renaissance in Kyoto, and the literati.  Included are illustrations of objects drawn from thirty-three private and public collections in the Untied States and Europe.
