Offered for purchase is an original sculpture by Canadian Folk Artist Mark Robichaud. It is a wood carved orange and black fish attached to a wood base. A slender metal rod connects the fish to the base. It is signed by Robichaud on the base (photo 7). Mark Robichaud worked as a mill worker, clam digger and in a fish plant before taking up carving full time in the early 1980s. His work is featured in collections throughout North America, but I rarely see them in estate sales. This piece came from a home with an extensive folk art collection.

Approx. Dimensions: Total height (from base to top of fish) 6.5 inches; the fish measures 6 inches in length, 2 inches wide (at widest point), and it is about 0.5 inches wide (the fish is laterally compressed). The wooden base measures nearly 3 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall.

Condition: Very good. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The colors remain very vibrant - it's clear this piece was displayed carefully out of direct sunlight. I would categorize this as primitive art, so it is supposed to have a rustic appearance. For instance, there are spots where the paint is thicker compared to the rest of the sculpture (e.g. photo 9). The wood is also still rough in spots where it was not sanded completely smooth by the artist (e.g. photos 10 and 11). There is some light dust buildup on the top of the base, I will leave any cleaning/restoration to the new owner. The metal rod also has some paint flecks and a few rust patches (photo 8). Please inspect ALL photos, they are part of the description.
