London, Samuel Leigh 1824.
Offered here is the single panel 18 from the rare Myriorama optical game by John Heaviside Clark, printed in London by Samuel Leigh in 1824. Hand colored engraving panel, measuring 200 x 70 mm (8 x 3 inches). Very good condition. This Second Series of Clark's Myriorama, illustrating views of Italy, formed by placing interchangeable engraved panels in various combinations to create numerous pastoral images. The First Series was also published in 1824 and consisted of 16 panels, illustrated with aquatint images of the English countryside. This ingenious design allowed each card to be placed adjacent to another producing coherent landscape views with thousands of possible variations. This invention proved very popular and was mentioned in the Literary Gazette as new fashion in Paris.
