This is a beautiful and classic engine-turned barleycorn propelling pencil, by the English goldsmith S J Rose.  It is fully hallmarked to all elements as 18ct (clip, cap and barrel).  Hallmarks are for London and date stamped for 1959 (italic "d").

The pencil clip carries the maker's stamp of "Rose" and the barrel is fully hallmarked "18" for London and has the maker's mark "SJR".  Clip and cap are both hallmarked with the crown and "18" and the cap also is stamped "MADE IN ENGLAND".  The pencil is in generally good condition and has a clear and unengraved cartouche.  There is some bruising to the gold in areas (see photographs), one scratch across the cap's "MADE IN ENGLAND" stamp and a crack to the gold towards the top of the barrel.

The pencil is propelling well, the internal twist mechanism is working but needs rebalancing to withdraw the lead ie it only propels at present.

GOLD CONTENT:  I am asked occasionally "how much gold is in that pen / pencil?".  This pencil was easy to disassemble to isolate the hallmarked barrel, clip and cap, and here are the numbers (see photographs).  The cap is definitely not lined, I could not detect a liner in the barrel but that is not a guarantee that there isn't one:

Total weight of pencil is 24.6g,
Weight of hallmarked barrel, clip, cap = 14.57g,
Weight of internal mechanism, cone and brass internal cap = 10.09g.

As an indication of gold value at c. £38 / g of 18ct gold, estimated gold scrap value of this pencil is c. £550.

However, scrapping these lovely items makes me shudder, so assuming you are looking at this pencil as a cherished, vintage British writing implement, then I would say this beauty would probably do well to be serviced and it will then serve you for years and years to come.  I am including a vintage case of leads and the pencil is in a black velvet pouch.

Other dimensions (approximate):  length 11.7g and width 0.9cm.
