This is a Conway Stewart 388 fountain pen in burgundy marble (rose pink marble) with a 14ct gold nib, lever fill in its original box. It is dated vintage 1950 - 1955 (the barrel stamp changed in 1950 to the design on this pen).
In good, clean, used condition, I have lightly serviced it (cleaned and installed a new ink sac) so it is fully working. The pen is in very good condition for c. 70 years of age - the burgundy / rose pink marble is eye-catching and clean. I am very critical of my pens in the descriptions, so there is the assessment of this little beauty:
Metalwork its bright and clean, 3 cap rings and clip all in excellent order, some slight brassing to the lever. There is no damage or scoring or personal engravings to the pen body - there appear to be 2 hairline cracks to the cap lip (see photographs). Plastic is largely glossy and clean - some age-related handling wear - and the barrel is stamped "Conway Stewart 388" and "MADE IN ENGLAND".
Under magnification there appears to be one small separation of the original "wrap-around" plastic - this is near the top of the barrel and I have tried to show it in a photograph. Probably an original manufacturing defect. The cap top is the most visibly aged part of the pen, having discoloured to brown rather than the original black. However, I have not dyed it or altered or tried to mask this.
The nib is a 14ct gold nib, writing medium to fine - a precision writer with little flex. There is generous ink flow and the nib holds the paper well even when writing at speed. Little change to the line under work. Beautiful little pen.
Nib is stamped "Conway Stewart" and "14ct GOLD".
Original price was 21 shillings - which is around £100 in today's money - this was not a cheap pen.
The box is firm and strong although the outer faces are cosmetically worn. The box top has printing reading "THE Conway Stewart PEN".
