This is a very scarce 12-faceted Omas Extra (possibly a Lucens) vintage mechanical pencil from c. 1937 - 1938. It can be dated as such because it has the Greek Key band around the pencil body - which was phased out in 1937/8 to 3 narrow bands. At the same time (1938), the Parker arrow style clip - with the arrow feathers - was introduced and these became the badges of the Omas Extra Lucens.
This pencil is unusual as it has both the Greek Key and the arrow clip - pens and pencils usually have one or the other - but not both. So this pencil can be dated to the cusp of one being phased out and the other being phased in - 1937 - 1938. It is not a mixed pencil ie a different cap fitted on a different body - as the beautiful black / grey ripple lines of the celluloid align perfectly.
It is in excellent condition with no cracks or splits - the pencil's twist lead propel system is working perfectly. It is designed to only propel the lead, not withdraw it - this is done by twisting the top back, and pressing the lead to the paper. Takes 1.18mm lead (0.046") and is fitted with 2 lengths and is supplied with two vintage canisters of leads.
The celluloid is sheer eye-catching class - see video for its full flare and dazzle. The pencil has some age-related handling wear visible under magnification, and the screw-cap top has some wear around the top facets (see photos). The screw-cap top twists off to reveal the lead storage chamber.
All metalwork is in very good condition - bright and clean, some slight wear of gold plate apparent under magnification to edges. The faceted design offsets the Greek Key band design beautifully, and that design is in very good condition. The clip is in superb condition, bright and straight and clean. The brass lead-cone has a little patina (see photos).
The barrel is stamped "Omas Extra" in cursive script.
