Historic Hopi Dish

This is a historic piece of Hopi pottery made around the mid 20th century, before individual artists began to sign their work. It was created using traditional methods: handbuilt of local clay; surface polished; and handpainted with red and dark brown paints made from vegetal and mineral sources. A piece of natural yucca would have been fashioned into the brush. Nice use of stippled dots to create the look of another color. This was pit fired outside and shows some blushed of color, the "fire bloom." This would have been made to appeal to tourists visiting the west, so it is a utilitarian piece that is a portable size. The base is unsigned but there is an old penciled in price of 50 cents! This  bowl measures approx 1.75” H x 8.25” L x 5.5” D. This would be a wonderful addition to any southwest pottery collection.
