Hi there,

I'm selling a really beautifully illustrated music and songbook from 1883.

A charming collection of old poems and songs set to music by Theo Marzials and illustrated by Walter Crane, printed from wood blocks by Edmund Evans.

This is an adaption of Mr Walter Crane's Pan Pipes.

Crane explained that the book was given its landscape format so that it could be propped up on a piano.

The originals have been slightly altered by Theo Marzials.

Each piece of music is beautifully illustrated and is accompanied by additional verses.

This work includes forty-three illustrations

Please see the photos and feel free to ask any questions

This collection includes the songs 'The Passionate Shepherd', 'The Spanish Lady, 'In The Merry Month of May', The Three Ravens, 'My Lady Greensleeves, Sally in Our Alley', 'When the Bright God of Day', and more.

Arranged by the poet and composer Theo Marzials.

From the net, thanks to rookebooks and goodreads:

"Théophile-Jules-Henri "Theo" Marzials was a British poet, composer, and singer. Marzials was described in 1894 as a "poet and eccentric" by parodist Max Beerbohm, and, after writing and performing several popular songs, vanished into obscurity.

His poetry is seen as an example of 19th-century aestheticism."

"Walter Crane was an English artist and book illustrator.

He is considered, along with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif that the genre of English children's illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental stages in the latter 19th century.

His work featured some of the more colourful and detailed beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many nursery rhymes and children's stories for decades to come.

He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles, and other decorative arts.

Crane is also remembered for his creation of a number of iconic images associated with the international Socialist movement."

This is a first edition from 1883 and was given as a Christmas present to "Constance and Katherine."

I can't read the signature of the giver.

It is in very good condition, though there is some slight foxing in the first few cover pages.

The binding is good, with no pages loose. The corners are slightly bumped, with the top right corner more worn.

The colours of the illustrations are bright and vivid.

This was a significant book in the late Victorian era of emerging childhood, in amazing condition for its age.

I feel sure there is a home waiting to love and enjoy this lost gem...

I will pack it very carefully for travel.

Thanks for looking, and i'm always open to reasonable offers.
