Item up for bid is a fascinating piece of artwork mixed with poetry by notable Baltimore watercolorist J. Carrell Lucas. This piece is titled "Sic Transit Gloria Friday" and is addressed to "Harry Kris Kringlefelder" which we believe to be a nickname of the person it was presented to. The first verse makes mention of the story of Jonah and the whale with the second verse making mention of the Democratic Party with both verses ending by advising the reader to put it in their pipe and smoke it. End of the poem gives a name of "Christopher Billopp Oswald".Figure on the left and bar scene behind him were painted in watercolor and some pencil sketch lines are visible most notable in the area of the artists name who signed "Lucas" in the lower left. Paper shows yellowing and browning from age.

Piece was found framed in it's original framing from 1937. Glass could use a cleaning in corners and on the underside with no chips, cracks or breaks. Framing shows some patina and surface wear with wood wear around edges and corners with no cracks or breaks to the wood. Frame body shows some light soiling and could use a light polish. Item has an old and thin hanging wire installed and new owner may wish to change it to something more stable. Original matting is present showing some yellowing and browning from age with spots of discoloration visible.

Back side of the display shows wear and tear throughout to the backing paper. Attached to the backing paper are several clipped newspaper article with one in the lower left making direct mention of the artist giving this artwork to his friend identified on the back the year before the article was written. The newspaper article in the upper right is an editorial style article about the artist making mention of him as being "late". Both newspaper articles have handwritten dates from the original owner with a year of 1937. Back paper has handwritten markings of "Harry Kris Kringlefelder by J. Carrell Lucas Presented by the artist to Harry F. Klinefelter  Christmas 1936". Newspaper article on the upper left is an obituary of the artist.

Visible artwork measures 6-3/8" top to bottom by 8" wide. Entire framed display measures 12-3/4" top to bottom by 13-3/4" wide by 0-1/2" in depth. Wonderful piece that comes fresh to the market. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
