Crystal Lee: A Woman of Inheritance by Henry P. Leifermann - 1975 1st Printing HCDJ

The movie Norma Rae is based on the unionizing activities of Crystal Lee Sutton, who died in 2007 (at age 68) after a long battle with brain cancer.

In May 1973, Crystal Lee was about to be forcibly removed from the textile mill in which she had been working. Her union organizing activities had caught up with her. "Crystal Lee... pulled from the tabletop a sheet of stiff cardboard, one of the inserts used in packing. She picked up a black marking pencil from the table and began writing on the cardboard, in heavy, block letters... Crystal Lee hoisted herself onto the tabletop... She held her sign high over her head, in both hands, and slowly turned in a circle so the mill hands on the open floor,... all of them watching her now, could read what she had written: 'UNION.' ...She saw more mill hands holding their fists in the air, giving her V-for-victory signs, and doing it... quietly, standing by their machines." (p. 150) Sally Field, of Flying Nun fame, replicates this scene in the Norma Rae movie.
