Details:

In late 1963, a number of different UK companies secured official licences from the Beatles' management company, NEMS Enterprises Ltd, to make and sell items of official Beatles jewellery.

One of the first was west London jewellery company Sphinx, trading for this purpose under the name Anglo-American, who were granted world rights to make a number of hard gold plated items - brooches, pendants and rings - using this particular stylised scarab beetle design, registered at the same time they signed the NEMS contract (see pic 7 for design registration illustration).

Their initial designs used a single small beetle, like this one, or four small beetles joined together in a diagonal line. These proved popular enough for Anglo to produce a larger version of the single beetle brooch (see my other items).

Anglo's official Beatles items were sold on a backing card identifying them as 'Beatles' products (see pic 6, which shows an example of this small single beetle brooch on a card).

A young girl was photographed wearing one of the 'four-beetles' brooches when meeting the band backstage on 9 December at their Odeon Cinema show in Southend-on-Sea and asking them to autograph her competition-winning home-made Beatles model (see pic 8).
