A Fine Charles II (possibly James II) late 17th Century Circa 1678/1679 Solid Sterling Silver Trefid Spoon.

Known as the first pattern, this is an excellent early example of the Trefid/Trifid spoon. Rat tail to bowl and a scratch monogram CC to the reverse of the terminal. The trefid tip curls upwards; the bowl is much more of an even oval shape, rather than the modern "egg" shape.

Fully hallmarked for Adam King (dates seen 1683-1688, however this is a best estimate as many records were destroyed in a fire), London, date mark completely worn, Circa 1679.

I believe this spoon to date to 1678/1679 due to the appearance of the London leopard head and the shape of the shield for the lion passant. Although this does not tally with the dates on file foe the maker being "seen around".

In excellent pre-loved and used antique condition, with some minor yet deepish scratches. Clearly from a collectors estate. No dents, splits, tears or repairs. Far better than "commensurate with age".

NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event I am unable to associate a date to this spoon.

I have given it a quick wipe over, but as with all my items I don't over clean or polish. There may be the odd age related wear/mark commensurate with age, anything of note is listed above.
